Bad Education is a 2019 American comedy-drama film, directed by Cory Finley, from a screenplay by Mike Makowsky. It stars Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Ray Romano, Geraldine Viswanathan, Alex Wolff, Kayli Carter, and Rafael Casal.

The film is based on real-life events that occurred at writer and co-producer Mike Makowsky's high school during the time he was a student there.[2] It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2019 where it received positive reviews with critics praising Makowsky's screenplay and especially the performances of Jackman and Janney.



In March 2018, it was announced Hugh Jackman had joined the cast of the film, with Cory Finley directing from a screenplay written by Mike Makowsky. Makowsky, Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Julia Lebedev, Edward Vaisman and Oren Moverman serve as producers on the film, under their Automatik and Sight Unseen banners, respectively.[3] In June 2018, Allison Janney joined the cast of the film.[4] In July 2018, Geraldine Viswanathan and Ray Romano joined the cast of the film.[5][6] In October 2018, Alex Wolff, Rafael Casal, Stephen Spinella, Annaleigh Ashford, Hari Dhillon, Jimmy Tatro, Jeremy Shamos, Kathrine Narducci, Welker White, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Peter Appel, Ray Abruzzo, Catherine Curtin and Kayli Carter joined the cast of the film.[7][8][9]

Principal photography began in October 2018.[10][11]


It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2019.[12] Shortly after, HBO Films acquired distribution rights to the film for 17.5 million.[13]
