Point guard
–
The point guard, also called the one or point, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position, point guards are expected to run the teams offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right players at the right time. A point guard, like other player positions in basketball, specializes in certain skills, a point guards primary job is to facilitate scoring opportunities for his/her team, or sometimes for themselves. Lee Rose has described a point guard as a coach on the floor and this involves setting up plays on the court, getting the ball to the teammate in the best position to score, and controlling the tempo of the game. A point guard should know when and how to instigate a fast break, point guards are expected to be vocal floor leaders. A point guard needs always to have in mind the times on the clock and the game clock, the score. Among the taller players who have enjoyed success at the position is Magic Johnson, other point guards who have been named NBA MVP include Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Derrick Rose and two-time winners Stephen Curry and Steve Nash. In the NBA, point guards are usually about 65 or shorter, having above-average size is considered advantageous, although size is secondary to situational awareness, speed, quickness, and ball handling skills. Shorter players tend to be better dribblers since they are closer to the floor, after an opponent scores, it is typically the point guard who brings the ball down court to begin an offensive play. Passing skills, ball handling, and court vision are crucial, speed is important, a speedy point guard is better able to create separation and space off the dribble, giving him/herself room to work. Point guards are often valued more for their assist totals than for their scoring, another major evaluation factor is Assist-to-Turnover ratio, which reflects the decision-making skills of the player. Still, a point guard should also have a reasonably effective jump shot. The point guard is positioned on the perimeter of the play and this is a necessity because of the point guards many leadership obligations. Many times, the point guard is referred to by announcers as a coach on the floor or a floor general, in the past, this was particularly true, as several point guards such as Lenny Wilkens served their teams as player-coaches. This is not so common anymore, as most coaches are now solely specialized in coaching and are non-players, former Suns head coach Mike DAntoni had often allowed Steve Nash to freelance when leading the Suns offense, even letting him call his own plays at times. Even point guards who are not given this much freedom, however, are extensions of their coach on the floor. John Stockton is widely considered to be the point guard. He also used the pick and roll maneuvre with Karl Malone, along with leadership and a general basketball acumen, ball-handling is a skill of great importance to a point guard

Philadelphia

In 1682, William Penn, an English Quaker, founded the city to serve as capital of the Pennsylvania Colony. Philadelphia was one of the capitals in the Revolutionary War. In the 19th century, Philadelphia became an industrial center. It became a destination for African-Americans in the Great Migration. The areas many universities and colleges make Philadelphia a top international study destination, as the city has evolved into an educational, with a gross domestic product of $388 billion, Philadelphia ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation. Philadelphia is the center of activity in Pennsylvania and is home to seven Fortune 1000 companies. The Philadelphia skyline is growing, with a market of almost 81,900 commercial properties in 2016 including several prominent skyscrapers. The city is known for its arts, culture, and rich history, Philadelphia has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other American city. Fairmount Park, when combined with the adjacent Wissahickon Valley Park in the watershed, is one of the largest contiguous urban park areas in the United States. The 67 National Historic Landmarks in the city helped account for the $10 billion generated by tourism, Philadelphia is the only World Heritage City in the United States. Before Europeans arrived, the Philadelphia area was home to the Lenape Indians in the village of Shackamaxon, the Lenape are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government. They are also called Delaware Indians and their territory was along the Delaware River watershed, western Long Island. Most Lenape were pushed out of their Delaware homeland during the 18th century by expanding European colonies, Lenape communities were weakened by newly introduced diseases, mainly smallpox, and violent conflict with Europeans. Iroquois people occasionally fought the Lenape, surviving Lenape moved west into the upper Ohio River basin. The American Revolutionary War and United States independence pushed them further west, in the 1860s, the United States government sent most Lenape remaining in the eastern United States to the Indian Territory under the Indian removal policy. In the 21st century, most Lenape now reside in the US state of Oklahoma, with communities living also in Wisconsin, Ontario. The Dutch considered the entire Delaware River valley to be part of their New Netherland colony, in 1638, Swedish settlers led by renegade Dutch established the colony of New Sweden at Fort Christina and quickly spread out in the valley. In 1644, New Sweden supported the Susquehannocks in their defeat of the English colony of Maryland

Roman Catholic High School

Roman Catholic, or simply Roman, as it is often called, was founded by Thomas E. Cahill, a 19th-century Philadelphia merchant. He saw the need to create a school that offered a free Catholic education for boys and he died before he saw his vision come to life, however, the wishes that he laid out in his will were followed. As such, Roman Catholic opened its doors in 1890 and offered an education to boys. Due to increased costs of staff and facilities, free admission to the school ended in the 1960s, in 1985, the Archdiocese slated the school for closing due to lowering enrollment. However, the alumni association, with the blessing of Philadelphias John Cardinal Krol. Romans Alumni Association, which had existed for over 70 years, came together to raise funds, the rector of the school even applied to have the building itself kept as a historic landmark, which was accepted. The significance of the landmark designation means the building on the corner of Broad. Also, its exterior must always stay the same — though it not have to remain a school. Roman Catholic High School was built to hold about 750 to 800 students, however, because of high demand, it is above capacity and holds closer to 1100. To select its students, the school holds an entrance test every October, November, of the 600 or 700 students that apply, only about 300 to 350 will be accepted. Students who do well on these tests also may receive scholarships ranging from a few hundred dollars to as much as $4000 a year, usually, about 40 students receive scholarships. Roman, like high schools, has a tracking system, that is, first track, second track. Roman, however, is unique in that it tracks its honors class into three classes, while students in the honors classes learn the same material at the same pace, it creates a better learning system to have students of the same level together. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, Roman announceed the implementation of a 1,1 iPad initiative, due to the ever-changing face of education, students require different tools and strategies. The initiative will allow students and teachers to individualize and differentiate instruction in a way that is familiar to todays students, students will work on essential 21st century skill sets needed to meet state and national standards. The article included the story of Joe, a 59-year-old who spoke of his abuse at the hands of Father McGuigan when in the grade at Roman Catholic High School. The school is located on the northeast corner of Broad and Vine Streets, faced in marble, it stands on a granite foundation. The building originally had a 150-foot marble tower topped in copper, the original three-story building received a two-story additional wing in 1953, where the physics and biology labs and the cafeteria are located

Pittsburgh Panthers men's basketball

The Pittsburgh Panthers mens basketball is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate mens basketball program of the University of Pittsburgh, often referred to as Pitt, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Pitt mens basketball competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Panthers were retroactively recognized as the pre-NCAA Tournament national champion twice by the Helms Athletic Foundation, on March 28,2016, the school announced the hiring of Kevin Stallings as coach after the departure of Jamie Dixon. The University of Pittsburgh began playing basketball in 1905–06 under coach Benjamin Printz. The University did not field a team during the 1909–10 and 1910–11 seasons, flint led the Panthers to eight winning seasons during his ten years at the helm and coached future Pitt coach H. C. Henry Clifford Doc Carlson, MD took over as coach in 1922 and those teams were led by National Player of the Year, 3-time All-American and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Charlie Hyatt. Carlson was a coach who would be inducted into the Naismith. He also developed the widely emulated Figure Eight Offense and also experimented with various conditioning techniques, under Carlson, and led by two-time All-American Claire Cribbs, Pitt continued success through the 1930s winning four Eastern Intercollegiate Conference Championships. On February 28,1940, Pitt played in the first ever televised basketball game, Carlson also led Pitt to its first ever NCAA appearance en route to the 1941 NCAA Final Four. Carlsons tenure at Pitts helm lasted for 30 consecutive years before he retired following the 1952–53 season, Pitt moved their competition into the Fitzgerald Field House in 1951, leaving the Pitt Pavilion, housed inside of Pitt Stadium. Pitt would continue to play in the Fieldhouse until 2002, timmons also led Pitt to an NCAA appearance in 1963 and its first NIT appearance in 1964. Timmons was succeeded by head coach Charles Buzz Ridl who became famous for his amoebe defense, with All-American Billy Knight, Ridl led Pitt to the Elite Eight in 1974, with early round victories over St. Josephs and Furman. Pitt lost to national champion North Carolina State in the Eastern Regional Final played in Raleigh. Following the graduation of Knight and Martin, Pitt made an NIT appearance the following year, Pittsburgh native Tim Grgurich, who was an assistant coach under Ridl, became Pitts next head coach. He led Pitt into the inaugural 1976–77 season of the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League and that initial year, Larry Harris, a 66 forward with an impressive outside shot and an ability to score points in traffic, won the league scoring title. Grgurich also led Pitt to the 1980 NIT, Grgurich was succeeded by Lafayette coach Dr. Roy Chipman who began Pitts rollercoaster-like ride back to national significance. In his first season at the helm, the Panthers won the Eastern Eight Conference Tournament, in the 1981 NCAA Tournament, Pitt defeated Idaho in overtime in the first round, they lost to North Carolina in the second round. Chipmans Panthers enjoyed similar success the season, defeating archrival West Virginia for their last Eastern Eight Tournament Championship

2011 NBA draft

The 2011 NBA draft was held on June 23,2011 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The draft started at 7,00 pm Eastern Daylight Time, in this draft, National Basketball Association teams took turns selecting amateur U. S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The Cleveland Cavaliers had the first pick, choosing point guard Kyrie Irving of Duke. Of the 60 players drafted,7 were freshmen,7 were sophomores,14 were juniors,19 were seniors,12 were international players without U. S. college basketball experience, and 1 was a D-League player. The 2011 NBA draft marked the time the New Jersey Nets made an NBA draft appearance. After the end of the Nets 2011-12 season, the relocated to Brooklyn. The Nets made their first draft appearance with the Brooklyn moniker in 2012 and these players were not selected in the 2011 NBA draft but have played at least one game in the NBA. As of 2010, the eligibility rules for the draft are listed below. All drafted players must be at least 19 years old during the year of the draft. In terms of dates, players eligible for the 2011 draft must be born on or before December 31,1992. Any player who is not a player, as defined in the CBA. The basic requirement for automatic eligibility for a U. S. player is the completion of his college eligibility, players who meet the CBA definition of international players are automatically eligible if their 22nd birthday falls during or before the calendar year of the draft. U. S. players who were at least one year removed from their high school graduation and have played basketball with a team outside the NBA are also automatically eligible. A player who is not automatically eligible must declare his eligibility for the draft by notifying the NBA offices in writing no later than 60 days before the draft, for the 2011 draft, this date fell on April 24. Under NCAA rules, players only have until May 8 to withdraw from the draft. This year, a total of 69 collegiate players and 20 international players declared as early entry candidates, at the withdrawal deadline,41 early entry candidates withdrew from the draft, leaving 42 collegiate players and six international players as the early entry candidates for the draft. A player who has hired an agent will forfeit his college eligibility. Also, while the CBA allows a player to withdraw from the draft twice, the first 14 picks in the draft belong to teams that missed the playoffs, the order will be determined through a lottery
